As we hit the middle of July, college move-in is quickly approaching for 2025 grads. Most schools provide a pretty detailed packing list (don't forget those XL twin sheets!), so here are a few things you might not think of:
- Halloween costume starter items
- Suit or dress for formal events
- Door stop (most dorm room doors don't prop open easily - this is a great way to socialize with other students in your dorm)
- Small fan (lots of dorms don't have A/C)
- Small reusable container for snacks
And, a few tips for parents on move-in weekend:
- Bring scissors to cut through packaging, shipping boxes, etc.
- Get the contact info of your student's roommate's parent(s) - hopefully you will only need it to make plans for dinner on family weekend or other fun purposes. A very wise friend shared this tip with me and it gave me peace of mind during my kids' freshman year.
- Be clear about your "goodbye" expectations: for example, "We'll take one photo in front of your dorm and then leave" or "I'd like one photo of you with your roommate before we leave". Sounds funny, but this tip helped me combat too long (or too rushed) goodbyes.
Happy move-in!
