I recently visited the University of Connecticut. Here are a few takeaways from my experience:
- While there are several University of Connecticut campuses throughout the state, I visited the flagship campus in Storrs, CT (the school referred to as “UConn”). The university has 19,000 undergraduates and is located in the heart of the northeast, 2.5 hours from New York City and 1.5 hours from Boston.
- The Admissions office offers two things that I thought were unique for a public university: 1) they offer an Early Decision application option (binding admission) which is traditionally seen at private colleges (though this is changing with University of Michigan recently announcing an ED program), and 2) one day a year all application fees are waived for Connecticut residents (can you imagine the University of California system doing this!?!)
- The college’s mascot is the Huskies, and a dog theme can be seen throughout campus. It’s a tradition for students to take their photo with the statue of Jonathan the Husky located right outside Gampel Pavilion, the home court of UConn’s perennially successful women’s and men’s basketball teams.
- Downtown Storrs is just steps from campus and offers a variety of shops and restaurants catering to university students and staff, including the “Dog Lane Cafe” which makes a yummy turkey and avocado sandwich and of course, continues the dog theme :)
Go Huskies!
